Meet Your Provincial Fair Student - Christi

Provincial Heritage Fair Student, Christi
Grade 7 at Cornerstone Christian Academy

Project Title
Marina Nemat: 'I live to testify.'  Truth or Lie?

Why did you choose this topic?
I chose this topic because I was inspired by Marina Nemat's bravery, strength, and courage to stand up for what she believed in and survive her torment in a country that is abusive to human rights. It seemed like very few people knew who she was, so I wanted to share her story. I also wanted to use this project to advocate for human rights as well, as it is a topic I feel very strongly about.

What part of the Provincial Fair are you most excited about?
I am most excited about the walking tour of downtown Squamish.

Favourite school subject
Social Studies

Favourite colour
Grey

Favourite kind of food
Japanese food

Place you would most like to visit
Berlin, Germany

If you could meet any historical figure, who would it be and why?
If I could meet any historical figure, it would be Viola Desmond. It would be her because she is one of the first Canadians to challenge racial segregation, which is a huge milestone in our history that means something to many people. Racial discrimination is a topic that I am passionate about and it is completely relevant today. I think it would be interesting and beneficial for all people to hear what Desmond would do to challenge racial discrimination in today's society.

Une Goutte de Sang Royal

Why did you choose this topic?
My dad discovered that we were related to 12 kings and five emperors including Charlemagne AND to Catherine de Baillon, one of the “King’s Daughters.” I was very intrigued by this and I thought it would make a cool project

What part of the Provincial Fair are you most excited about?
Meeting new people in the dorms

Favourite school subject
History

Favourite colour
Black

Favourite kind of food
Extra cheesy pizza

Place you would most like to visit

If you could meet any historical figure, who would it be and why?
King Louis XIV because it would be neat to meet a King, especially during a time of the big ships that explored the seas and during the times of colonizing new lands.

Meet Your Provincial Fair Student - Shreyanshi

Provincial Heritage Fair Student, Shreyanshi
Grade 6 at Diefenbaker Elementary

Project Title:
The Canadian Walkie-talkie

Why did you choose this topic?
I wanted to learn about something that impacts our lives currently. My family and I use walkie-talkies when we go hiking or camping. This is what sparked my curiosity! As this Canadian invention continues to have a humongous impact on our daily lives, I felt that it is important for people to know about this topic as Canadians should feel proud of this valuable invention, which has put our nation on the world stage for telecommunication.

What part of the Provincial Fair are you most excited about?
I am really excited to meet other delegates and learn about their projects, as the provincial fair will provide me with an opportunity to make new friends. Additionally, I am very eager for the pin trading activity, which will allow for exchanging of pins from all regions across the Province! Visiting all the historical sites and viewing Squamish will be the cherry on top of the already delightful cake.

Favourite school subject
My favourite subjects at school are Social studies, P.E., Science, French, and Math.

Favourite colour
Green, purple, and turquoise are my favorite colours.

Favourite kind of food
Just to name one dish is difficult, and as a vegetarian, a few cuisines that I like include Indian, Italian, Chinese, Japanese and Mediterranean.

Place you would most like to visit
Some places I would love to visit are the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India. Moreover, I would love to visit Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal in the near future!

If you could meet any historical figure, who would it be and why?
Queen Elizabeth I, as she introduced a new era of women empowerment. This wise monarch’s influential decisions and international mindset maintain her as a respected figure in history.

Meet Your Provincial Fair Student - Colin

Provincial Heritage Fair Student, Colin
Grade 7 at Cornerstone Christian Academy

Project Title
Nunavut - A Treasury in Canada

Why did you choose this topic?
I found it interesting that Nunavut is Canada's newest territory. I also wanted to find out why it separated from the Northwest Territories. There are so many different inventions by the Inuit that are still used today such as the kayak and parka, and I wanted to share these facts to everyone.

What part of the Provincial Fair are you most excited about?
I'm most excited about the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge, because I have only been on two, the Capilano and Lynn Canyon, so it would be interesting to see the different views between all of them.

Favourite school subject
Math

Favourite colour
Black

Favourite kind of food
Korean

Place you would most like to visit
Antarctica

If you could meet any historical figure, who would it be and why?
Charles Darwin. I come from a Christian school, and when he was young, he too was a Christian, so it would be interesting to see him face-to-face talking about his theories about evolution.
